For business reasons most network manufacturers like to drive customers (data centers, content delivery networks) into a adopting a single manufacturer configuration. The common justification for this is a guarantee of “inter-operability.” However, time and experience have proven that this is not the best approach to designing a network as most manufacturers have proven their inability to provide a single solution that handles all the needs of any given network. The market shares of various manufacturers in different specialized markets are good indicators of the inefficiency of the one vendor, single solution approach.
